I have always dreamed of having a home gym! So, when it came time to start looking for a new home space for a gym was a must-have! We passed over several houses because it didn’t have the space we wanted. But as soon as we finished the walk-through of this house we knew exactly where the home gym would go! I couldn’t wait to start the renovations!
There was a lot of work that we had to do on the house so the gym had to wait a while. However, it’s finally complete and I am loving it! I spent a good deal of time planning and designing our home gym and in doing so I have come up with the five must-haves of a home gym!
Must-Haves of a Home Gym #1
Everyone has a different dream gym and making it come to fruition all depends on your space available. Your wants and needs will dictate the space needed. Are you building a yoga space you probably don’t need a large area. If you are building a cardio studio you will probably need more room. You will also need to keep in mind that you will need space for storage. You will need a place to put your weights, yoga mats, and all the other fun things a home gym has.
As I mentioned, the house we found had the perfect space for a home gym. There were a few must-haves for your home gym list. We wanted to have room for a treadmill, another piece of cardio equipment, kickboxing, strength training, and yoga. Pretty much I wanted a big box gym in my basement. And we were lucky enough to be able to make it happen! In fact, we even hung mirrors in the kickboxing, strength training and yoga area!

Flooring is also dependent on the goal of your gym. Is your goal weight lifting then you probably want a durable rubber mats. If your goal is yoga hard wood or foam flooring is probably preferable. Is your major focus cardio equipment? Then you could get away with cement flooring. The key is to evaluate yourgoal and the space you have.
In our gym, we decided to go with foam flooring. We debated between durable rubber mats and foam flooring. We didn’t want to cut corners but we also wanted to keep the bottom line in mind. The nice thing about foam flooring is that it is economical and versatile.
Must-Haves of a Home Gym #3
Guess what? Here is another one that is all dependent on the goals of your home gym. Are you focused on cardio, strength, yoga, or all of the above? If cardio is your goal then you will need a treadmill, spin bike, elliptical, or whatever your fancy is. If strength is your focus you will need weights and a bench. Yoga is a little easier! You will need a mat and maybe a block! Maybe you’re in to boxing so a heavy bag is the key! The equipment must-haves all depend on what you want in a home gym.
We have a little of everything. It was important for me that we had a treadmill. Since my accident running outside in the winter is out of the question. My husband wanted strength equipment so we have bands and free weights. And for a little variety we have a spin bike and punching bag.
Another important piece of equipment for me was a good way to measure progress and calculate how many calories I need to maintain or lose weight. I don’t love scales but I do really like the EatSmart Precison CalPal Digital Bathroom Scale. What I like about it is that it estimates the number of calories needed per day to maintain my current weight. So, it really does takes the guesswork out of calorie counting and its estimations help me with my weight loss goals.
Must-Haves of a Home Gym #4
Whether your are focusing on cardio, strength, or yoga media is a must-have of a home gym! When you have your long run to knock out on a treadmill a TV is a must have!!! It’s the best time to binge on your favorite show! If you’re strength training a good playlist can make the difference! Maybe you want to follow a program so a DVD player or streaming device is a must-have!
Music is my number one must-have! For my husband, it’s a TV. So, we have both. We are also deciding on which steaming device we want in the gym. We can’t decide between an AppleTV or Amazon Fire TV Stick. I am pretty sure AppleTV will be the winner.
Must-Haves of a Home Gym #5
Yes, motivation! You can have all the items mentioned above but if you don’t have the motivation to use them they are pointless. We all have different motivators! For some it might be the gym itself. Others might find motivation in the results they get from their home gym. And still others might find motivation in working out with their spouse/partner/roommate. Whatever it is the key is that you find the motivator that works for you to used the home gym you built.
I have a lot of motivation for using our home gym! One is getting back to my happy place in both running and weight. My other motivation is the motivational items I have made sure put in our gym! I tried my hand at a bib art project that turned out pretty well and I have all my medals up. Every time I walk into the gym I get a big smile on my face! It is by far my favorite room in the house!
Do you have a home gym? What are your must-haves for a home gym? What is your motivator?
