Over the past few years, I have had the honor of being interviewed for a few podcasts. In my humble opinion
Since the first podcast
1. Think About What You’ll Be Discussing
Talk to the host in advance to know what topic(s) they want to discuss! Having run over the content in your head in advance will help the conversation flow. If it is easier to remember, write down a few bullet points! But don’t have a pre-planned script! That will sound and feel inauthentic.
2. Find a Quiet Place For the Conversation
Find a place where you will not be disturbed! You want to focus all your energy on your host not what is going on around you. So, make sure kids, spouses, pets, and anything else that could disturb you is tucked far away from where you will be doing the interview. Also, you may not believe it but background noise is easily picked up on podcasts! I am so embarrassed by my first interview! You can hear me letting the dog in and out and pacing the room…
3. Wear Headphones/Use a Microphone
You will sound so much better if you follow this one! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy! In fact, I almost exclusively use the headphones Apple includes with their iPhone’s. When you use headphones/a mic you sound so much more clear and crisp. And do not play with the headphones when you are being recorded! The recording will catch it!
4. Turn the Notifications Off on Your Electronics
We get so used to hearing those dings and buzzes that we don’t even realize they are happening. However, it’s super annoying to listen to a podcast and hear a text notification followed by a Facebook notification. We are all important but for the hour you are recording shut them off!!!
5. Have Water
Your mouth and throat can get incredibly dry during your conversation! But make sure you are as quiet as possible when you take a drink! Remember sound you make will be picked up on the recording!!!
6. Don’t Think of It as an Interview but as a Conversation
Have you ever noticed that the podcasts where the conversation follow easily are so much easier to listen to? I have realized that if I go into an “interview” think about it as a conversation with a friend it sounds so much better! Let the conversation follow!
7. Be Aware
Be aware of repeating the same phrase over and over! Also, Be aware of bodily noises like coughing, lip smacking, or other mouth noises. Both situations are super annoying to listen to as a listener! And when you listen to your interview you will be mortified when you hear them! I can almost instantly pick out the phrases I say over and over as soon as I hear the first one. Don’t be that person!
8. Thank Your Host
This is a must! Use your manners and thank the host for interviewing you! It seems like a given but sometimes your conversation can come to an abrupt end so think ahead! I almost always try to thank them in the beginning and end! Again, being interviewed for a podcast is the biggest compliment in my book so I am very thankful they chose to chat with me!
Bonus Tip to Being the Best Podcast Guest
Share your episode when it is released!!! If you were asked to be on a podcast most likely you have a message to share! Share it and by doing so you are helping the host get their message out too!
I hope these tips for being the best podcast guest help you in your future interviews!
