I love reading! Call me crazy but I really love books about running too. Due to that, I recently read Running Home: Big-League Wife, Small-Town Story by Alisha Perkins.
I had my eye on Running Home since I had found out that Alisha was writing it! You see Alisha Perkins is local and I am a major fan girl! She is a mom of two daughters, wife to Glen Perkins the closer for the Minnesota Twins, and a runner. But more than that she is also an advocate for mental illness. She is very open about her struggle with anxiety and how running has helped.
I started following Alisha’s blog several years ago (she quit writing it but you can still read old posts here) because she was so open about her anxiety. As someone who suffers with it myself it was nice to know what others are going through. But Alisha’s story was much like mine, once I started running I realized that it really made a difference with my anxiety. No it didn’t cure it (there is not cure) but it did help me control it.
So when I found out that there was going to be a book release party at Mill City Running, you better bet I was going to be there! The Running Home release party was well worth the wait! I got not only a really good book but I also got the honor to meet Alisha! I can tell you that she is one of the nicest, most down to earth people you will have the pleasure of meeting.
Meeting and getting to talk to Alisha made me even more excited to read Running Home. I sat down that evening and read half of it and finished it a few days later. I liked it so much I just recently reread it again!
What I loved about this book is how it is laid out. Each chapter is about a race she has ran but it is so much more than just a race recap. It details her adventures in running, motherhood, being the wife of a professional baseball player, struggling with anxiety, and so much more. Reading made me feel like we were sitting down for coffee and discussing our running adventures. It is conversational and fun!
I connect well with the book because of my anxiety but you don’t have to be someone who has anxiety or runs to enjoy the book. In Running Home, Alisha opens up about all aspects of life so just about everyone will enjoy this book!
If you want to learn more about Running Home or Alisha Perkins you can go to her website. You can also follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. And if you read this book and love it you will be happy to know she is working on a second one!
