I had been looking forward to the race for a few reasons. I got to run a race for the first time in over a month and I was meeting up with my friend, Amy who I hadn’t seen in a few years! And to top it off it was a gorgeous evening which always makes for a great race!
The 50th & France area doesn’t have much parking so runners were asked to park at a local mall and then be shuttled over to the race. I had good timing because I was able to get on a shuttle as soon as I parked and then I was on my way to the race. The ride was just a few minutes and once I was off the bus I went to bag check to drop my stuff off.
The Esprit de She Ambassadors were hoping to get together but with the amount of people and traffic delays it didn’t work. So then I was off to find my friend, Amy. I was very excited to see her because as I mentioned, it had been a couple of years since we had seen each other. Amy was much easier to find than the ambassadors! We talked for a few minutes and then made our way closer to the start to take part in some of the pre-race festivities.
I knew I would have to take easy since it was by first race back and because I have been working at keeping my heart rate low when I run. Amy and started together but I knew early on I wouldn’t be able to keep up with her. The goal for my heart rate training is to keep it under 168 beats per minute due to that I had to keep an eye on my watch. Within the first quarter mile I was up to 190, so I told Amy to go ahead and I slowed my pace down. My heart rate didn’t slow down enough with the slower paced run which meant I needed to start walking.
I haven’t walked a race that I had planned on running before so it was an interesting perspective. Initially, I struggled with being passed by what felt like everyone. However, as time went on I realized it was fun to take it all in. One of the big reasons I am so fond of the Esprit de She race series is because it promotes women to get out and being active, but more than that, all women are welcome to participate! Young women, little girls, grandmas, and every women in between! For a while I followed a mom and daughter pair, I was impressed to see that little girl out running the race with her mom! It made me smile!
I tired to pick my pace up closer to the end of the race but again my heart rate got too high. So in the end I walked the majority of the race but at least I got to do it!
There weren’t a lot of people at the finish since it took me almost 51 minutes to finish. But they still had cold water and Aspire! Before starting the race I was aware the after race food would be in a different area. After finishing my Aspire, I picked up my bag and headed to the bubbly bar and food. One of the perks of an Esprit de She race is that each racer gets two free glasses of wine or champagne, there was no way I was going to miss out on that!
Amy and I met up again at the bubbly bar, we both had a glass of champagne and then decided to take advantage of the sidewalk sales that were going on. We wanted to check out prAna, so that was the first stop on the list. They were having great deals but I think with how sweaty I was I just wasn’t in to shopping.
We both had to catch the shuttle back and we knew the last shuttle was at 9:30pm but wanted to see if we could find the food before we had to catch it. As we were walking over to the food, a nice gentleman told us he had the last few salads and gave us each two. Then we found our way to the rest of the vendors but since it was 9pm they were all closing up. That ended up being in benefit because they had lots of extras they wanted to get rid of, I ended up walking a way with several bags from Target with lot of sample in them. I must note, that I only wanted one! However the the poor guy handing them out was desperate to get rid of them and bagged me to take a few more. I will tell you that I didn’t even keep one but they went to good homes!
Amy and I were able to catch the shuttle back and again I had great timing because it was a limo bus as opposed to the school bus that I took on the way to the race!
