Watching Hawii Five-0 is so much more fun after our Hawaiian Vacation! It is a lot of fun to see place we had been and to know where the actors are! In fact as I am writing this post I have it on in the background and they filmed in a restaurant we ate in!
One evening when I came home from work Justin told me he had finally heard about the project he was working on in Hawaii. I was super excited, then he told me that we would be leaving three weeks and a day! I was even more excited.
We left Minneapolis on Saturday morning at 7 am and landed at 1 pm in Honolulu. It was nice to get to Hawaii early in the afternoon but for us it was 6 pm at home. It had already been a long day of flights but we still had to go to my Hawaii race. After getting the news that we were for sure going to Hawaii, the first thing I did was sign up for a the NiteRun Kailua so I could check state #8 off my list.
By the time we made it to bed that night we had been up for 23 hours, it was a long day but so worth it. Because of the long day, we both thought we would sleep later the next morning. Oh how wrong we were! I was up at 4 am ready to go for the day. I tried to be quiet so I didn’t wake Justin up, so I thought going to the hotel gym for a quick run was the way to start the day.
After my run, we got ready and spent the day exploring our hotel and area around the hotel. That evening we went to The Big Kahuna Laua, what an amazing evening! When we got there they gave us the best pina coladas I have ever had. Then we got to do some fun cultural activities, I made a leis bracelet, learned how to hula, and watched the hula dancers.
On Monday, we took a driving tour of O’ahu. We got to see all of the highlights of the island and some interesting commentary along the way. It ended up being a good day for the tour because it rained the whole day. However, not so good for the tour also because it washed out several of the roads so our driver had to do some back tracking. We still got to see most of the island which was better than nothing!
Tuesday, Justin worked in the morning so I went for a run to see Waikiki Beach and the surrounding area. I headed out of our hotel which was right on the ocean and followed the waterline, there were some amazing views! It was probably one of the best runs I have ever had! That afternoon, we spent some time at the beach and then had drinks at one of our hotels bars. We turned in early that night because the time difference finally caught up with us.
On Wednesday, Justin had to tour the project site so I had the whole day to myself. When I had ran the prior day I had gotten up to the entrance of Diamond Head, so I had decided to run up there again but also hike up to the top too! I had no idea what I had in store for myself! The run was challenging but nothing to terrible. But the hike, that was a whole other story! I thought I was in pretty good shape but wow it was hard! As I was just getting to the bottom of Diamond Head, Justin called me to let me know that they finished up way earlier than he had expected. I ran back to the hotel, and then we went out for lunch and took our rental car back since the next day was going to busy.
Thursday, we toured Pearl Harbor and the USS Missouri. First on the tour was Pearl Harbor, it was nice to see the iconic place but very sobering as well. I was amazed to see the oil still coming up from the ship and it will for hundreds of more years! Then we headed over to the USS Missouri, it was the where Japan surrender and WWII ended. It was super interesting to see and hear the history around. After our day out we went back to the hotel to pack and get ready to head back to Minnesota.
I am not much of a traveler, in fact most of the time I go on a vacation I am ready to go home about two days into the trip. This trip was totally different, I didn’t want to stay there but I was sad to leave! I cannot wait to go back! I want to go back to Honolulu and the other islands of Hawaii! I have never enjoyed relaxing, running or sight seeing quite as much as I did in Hawaii. I loved every minute of our Hawaiian vacation!
