Colorado, check! I finally got to check another state off my 50 state race challenge list! This past weekend I got to enjoy Esprit de She Red Rocks!
Esprit de She Red Rocks had it all! Pre-race yoga, a 5K or 10K, more yoga, and a concert! So, when the opportunity presented itself I jumped on it! I have always wanted to visit Red Rocks but add all of the above and it was a can’t miss event.
When I registered in July, I mentioned to my friend Megan that I was really looking forward to the event. She thought it sounded like a great event as well so it became a racecation girls weekend! I was really excited about that because I have never had a friend interested in joining me on one of my racecations.
We flew out early on Saturday morning for the Saturday afternoon race. When we landed we picked up our car and headed toward out hotel. We ended up getting there really early which gave us sometime to drive further into the mountains. The views were amazing!
We headed back to the hotel to change for the afternoon of fun. Then we were off to Esprit de She Red Rocks! I had been waiting for this since July!
First, we needed to pick up our bibs and tank tops. I immediately ran into Quinn who has big hand in putting on the amazing Esprit de She events. I have had the honor to get to know Quinn over the past year through my involvment in Esprit de She events. It is always great to see her, I got to know Quinn much better during the Esprit de She Lakeville Triathlon/Duathlon this past May. She and I went out to on the course to help a racer, another EDS ambassador, finish the duathlon. So you can imagine, I was really excited to see her!
After that Megan and I checked out the Lifestyle Market out. They had a lot of vendors with a lot of products I hadn’t tried before. Then we headed into the amphitheater to set up our yoga mats for the pre-race yoga. Megan decided while we were waiting for yoga to start that she was going to skip the race. Instead, she decided to do the second session of yoga. We were not planning on doing to do the race together as I was going to run and she was going to walk it. I totally understood because Megan is pregnant, it was a tough course, we were not used to the elevation, and it was really warm.
We had a lot of fun with the pre-race yoga. There was some yoga, dancing, laughing, and a lot of fun! I loved it because it was really hard to take yourself seriously because it was so much fun. It was so much different than any other yoga I had done.
Finally, it was race time! I made my way down to the start line. As I was heading down there, it dawned on me that the finish was at the top of the mountain (yes, mountain, I live in Minnesota where we hardly have hills) and in order to get there it would mean I head to go back up. When I got to the start line I noticed there was a hill right off the start. Yay! But, I got myself ready. And then we were off!
The first hill was tiny in comparison to what was come. I slowly eased into a comfortable pace and was feeling good when I hit the first mile marker. Then the amazing views came into sight! This was exactly what I was waiting for! However, those beautiful views also brought the mountains (remember I live in Minnesota) I was going to have to run up! It made me feel better knowing Megan was not out on the course. This course was proving to be very challenging.
When I hit mile 2.5 I considered calling it! I was feeling like I was in over my head. My heart rate was running really high with all the hills and the thinner air. I had to pull back walk which frustrated me but I soon realized many of the ladies were having to walk.
And then I saw the finish line! I dug deep to find to find the strength to run across that line. I have never been so excited to finish a race! Esprit de She Red Rocks was by far the most challenging course I have ever run! It was also the most beautiful course!
To end the night we got to enjoy the Jana Kramer concert! Thought I am not a country music listener I did enjoy the concert. It was an experience to be in the Red Rocks Amphitheater! As much fun as the concert was we call it a night early. We had to get to bed to be up for our flight home the next morning.
Esprit de She Red Rocks was really amazing! It far exceeded my expectation! I got to check another state off the list and spend time with a good friend. If you have the chance to go next year I would strongly suggest it! You can never go wrong with an EDS event!
