I took a little longer than I planned to get this final piece of the Ragnar Great River recap completed! In my last post, Ragnar Relay Great Rice Race Recap – Part 2, I recapped our first and second break as well as our second legs for Van 1.
Ragnar Relay Great River – Van 1 Leg 25 – 30
Last time I left off we were about to start running our third and final legs. When we left Nancy’s house Tim was navigating us to the next major exchange. We got there with more than enough time so we stayed in the nice warm car. After a while, it dawned on us that Bryan should be at the exchange pretty soon and Van 2 was not there. After a quick review of exchanges we realized Tim had navigated us to his exchange point with our van. So we quickly jumped in the van and headed to the right exchange. As we were approaching the exchange point we found Bryan on the road running. Tim jumped out and ran to the exchange with Bryan and then headed out on his own leg.
Thanks to Tim’s earlier navigation mistake we knew how to get back to the next exchange point. We didn’t have to wait long before we could see Tim! Then it was Nancy’s final time on the course. She was good and told us to meet her at the next exchange point. On our way there we passed her. We couldn’t do much cheering for her since it was so early in the morning. And before we knew it Nancy was done with her final leg and then Jeremy was out on his. We stopped to cheer him on about two miles into his six mile run. He looked strong and comfortable. I was so happy for him because I knew he had concerns about running his longest leg last.
We got to the exchange point where Jeremy would hand off to me, I made sure I was ready before I did anything else. I wasn’t going to have a repeat of Jeremy and my first exchange. However, just as I saw him coming up the hill my phone decided to lock up. I had felt really good about my last leg but now panic set in. There was no way that I could run those last few miles without music! But it was time to run so I ran. I spent the first half mile fumbling with my phone. I did finally get the music working which made my final three miles go by relatively quick. Unlike last year, I was a little sad to see my final exchange point. However, it was also nice to know that I my “work” was over.
I made the exchange with Maggie and then she was out on the course for her final leg. By the time Maggie was on the course it was starting to get hot. She had a hilly last leg that was lacking shade. I felt for her! But she finished with a smile on her face!
And then our last runner was out on the course!!! It was hard to believe that once we met Laurel at the exchange point we were “done” for the day! When we drove past her it was late enough in the day that we could actually cheer for her. We headed to our last major exchange to meet Van 2. We took a few minutes to get ourselves together and then we were up at the exchange point. Before we knew it Laurel was at the exchange and Van 1 was officially done with our legs!
Ragnar Relay Great River – Van 1 Final Break
Now that we were “done” the first thing we all were concerned with was food! Someone brought up Jimmy Johns and it sound like the best meal ever! I am pretty sure that exhaustion and hunger talking! However, it was really good!
Since we were not far from Nancy’s we headed back there to shower and clean up. Once we got there most of us started to rethink the shower. We all kind of felt like if we showered the “real tired” would set in and we wouldn’t want to do anything. Once everyone was ready we decided to head to the finish line. We hoped by getting there so early we could find a spot to park that wasn’t in the parking ramp. We found street parking that actually fit our huge van! I am not sure how Tim got it parked there but he did!
We walked through the University of Minnesota campus to get to the finish line. We found a great spot in the shade to watch all the teams finish. It was a lot of fun to be at the finish line watching all the finishers. Last year, I was in Van 2 so I spent next to no time watching finishers. Seeing all the teams come together and finish was really inspiring.
Ragnar Relay Great River – Finish Line and After
It was even more inspiring when we saw Bryan come around the bend to the finish! He was in a lot of pain but was going to finish his final leg and lead our team to the finish line! We crossed the finish line at 3:10ish on Saturday afternoon. We finished a whole two hours sooner than we had predicted!!! The first thing we had to do was get a picture of all our medals together. That was my biggest regret from the prior year! We had not put our medals together to see what the message on the back said!
After that it was time for some free pizza!!! I will say that the pizza wasn’t as good this year! However, I think that is because I wasn’t starving like I was last year! We all sat around chatting about what we had just accomplished. Which, in my opinion, is really amazing! Not everyone can say that they ran 200ish miles with 11 amazing individuals over a day and a half and would do it all over again!
Ragnar Relay Great River – My Final Thoughts
I loved my experience this year at Ragnar Relay Great River! I had a lot of fun last year but this year it was magical! Yes, I said magical! What an amazing team I was part of! I had an even more amazing #vanfam! Everything clicked this year! I really cannot put into words how much fun I had!
I choose to be in Van 1 this year because last year I was in Van 2. It was fun to see a different side of the course. I am really glad I did it that way. However, with that said, I don’t think I want to do Ragnar Great River again. It is an awesome course! The sights are amazing! But I have seen it twice.
Now with that said, I do have my sights set on Ragnar Northwest Passage…
Have you run Ragnar Relay? Have you run Ragnar Relay Great River? Or have you done a different running relay? If so, what is your favorite part?
