If you have been following me for any amount of time you know I love ZOOMA! So, when they announced they
It wasn’t a question when the race was announced if I would be running it. The question was what distance would I be running at ZOOMA Great Lakes. Should I run the 5K or the half marathon? My gut told me this would be my half marathon comeback race! I have wanted to do another half for a while so I registered for the half marathon!
I trained all summer for the half! In fact, my training was spot on! That was until three weeks prior to ZOOMA Great Lakes when I started experiencing foot pain. I ended up with tendonitis which sidelined me for a few weeks. By the time I got that under control it was too close to run the half marathon. Begrudgingly, I transferred to the 5K.
ZOOMA Great Lakes
Packet Pickup & Friday Evening
When race week finally came I was feeling super sorry for myself and did not want to make the drive. I really didn’t want to go because I couldn’t run the half marathon and just the day prior we found out that Baylee’s cancer possibly metastasized to her lungs. But I forced myself to go.
As an ambassador, we were asked to help out at packet pick up. I almost didn’t make it on time because of road construction. However, by some
After my shift was up, I headed to my hotel. The race was held at Lake Lawn Resort. However, I choose to stay somewhere else because you had to book for two nights if you stayed at the resort. After getting to my hotel I wished I would have stayed at the resort. The whole place was bad but the bathroom was the worst! In fact, you couldn’t even open the door two feet because it hit the toilet!
As tired as I was from getting up really early, driving five hours, and working the packet pick up I made myself go for a run just so I didn’t have to stay in my hotel room! I headed out for my run and as soon as I got going I realized it was exactly what I needed. I was able to run all the emotions out. There has to be something about ZOOMA and Baylee’s cancer. Last year, I got the news that she had cancer the day before I left for the Cape Cod race. But just like this race
While on my run, I got to see the town of Delavan. I also learned that Delavan was the birthplace of the P.T. Barnum Circus. And earlier in the day I had also learned that the Ringling Brothers Circus had also started in Wisconsin. Who knew a “racecation” could be so educating. And that one state would be the birthplace for so many circuses! Anyhow back to ZOOMA Great Lakes!
I got to the race at 6 am so I could make sure I had time to park and find my way to the start line for our ambassador picture. On top the ambassador picture I got to meet a few really cool individuals! First, I met fellow ambassador Rachel! She and I had connected through the Facebook group. And also I got to meet two other ambassador/bloggers Wendy of Taking the Long Way Home and Marcia of Marcia’s Healthy Slice! It’s always fun to meet my fellow ambassadors and bloggers!
Soon after that I, sadly, watched the half marathon take off. It stirred up some feelings I didn’t realize I had. But not too much longer it was time for the 5K to take off. I lined up towards the back because I was supposed to run this as a training run, not a race. And then we were off.
The course started on the golf course which was beautiful! We winded around several of the holes and then we moved through the resort. I was feeling good. And I noticed I was actually passing a few people (more commonly I am the one getting passed). I glanced at my watched and realized I was running much faster than my training pace yet feeling great! I also noticed that I had a real shot at getting one of my faster 5K race finishes. So, I thought about Coach Sara‘s strategy and thought she is the professional which is why she is my coach. And then my competitive side kicked and decided that I would have to just apologize for not following that strategy. Because I had to take the opportunity for my personal best.
At that point, I rounded the corner and Lake Delavan came into view. OMG! It was a gorgeous site so early in the morning. The lake, the sun, the resort, it was all so pretty! And then I saw the finish! There was no way I would PR but I would get my second fastest all-time 5K finish! I was more than happy to take that! In fact, I was over the moon happy with my finish!
On a high from the 5K finish, I made my way through the food line. I grabbed a bagel and cream cheese and some coffee. Honestly, I don’t even remember what the options were. I was so excited I didn’t even pay attention.
After eating I thought a quick massage would be nice to keep things loose for the 5 hour car ride home. The girl who gave me the massage was a tiny girl with a lot of strength. She actually made me squeal! I had to ask her to back off!
All in all, I am so happy I made myself go to ZOOMA Great Lakes! I had an amazing time! Would I do it again? YES! However, I would stick with the 5K because I heard that the half marathon is hilly! I don’t like hills… I think ZOOMA did an amazing job organizing the event and really hope they bring it back again next year!
Have you done ZOOMA Great Lakes? Or another ZOOMA race?
