When I started running, I didn’t have any goals in relation to running it was just to help lose weight and stay active. As time went on, I started to develop more and more goals. First it was improving pace, then it was going longer distances, and slowly I came to realize that I wanted to run in every state. So at the end of 2013 I made it an official goal to run a race in every state.
I have no distance goal/restrictions with this goal it is just to run a race. I have done 5K’s, half marathons and I will be doing a 10K, it is just for the ability to say I have ran a race in each state.
In 2014, I started out the year by registering for a half marathon in North Dakota. I not sure I really consider that a vacation since I grew up there and my parents are still there but it was a state other thank Minnesota so it counted. Keep in mind though, that I had already run a race in the great state of North Dakota, but since the goal became office in 2014 I had to run another race there.
I assumed that ND and IL would be the extent of my race-cations for 2013. However, about a month before the Chicago race I received an email from the Green Bay Packers (yes, I am a HUGE fan so I am on their mailing list) with details of their upcoming 5K. Um did I read that right? YES, I DID! Yep, sign me up!
As I read the info, I got a little sad because it was the Saturday that we were going to be in Chicago for EDS. And then I had a brain baby (yes, I said brain baby, my mom has always used the term and I find myself using it all the time!) instead of flying why not drive to Chicago on Thursday, run the race, spend Friday there and then head to Green Bay on Saturday for the Packers 5K! Great plan!
Now I just needed to get the fiancé on board… I was carefully to broach the subject with him, I wasn’t sure he would be interested. Surprisingly, he was on board from the get go and it actually got better for him because we found out the New York Mets (his favorite baseball team) would be planning in Milwaukee on Friday night. It was a vacation where we both got to do something we enjoy! If you ask me I got the better end of the deal. (The picture on my blog page in the gray pull-over is from that baseball game, I was holding a GO BREWERS sign).
With Florida already covered I had to start thinking about the other 7 and honestly I still don’t have all of them picked out but I do have some. As I write this blog post, I am on an airplane to Seattle to visit my brother and future sister-in-law and run a race in Mt. Vernon, WA. State two, check! I will be running a 5K and I would tell you the name but I cannot get my Wi-Fi to work on the plane and I can’t remember what it is, watch for Facebook posts about it.
In April, I will be running in Boston, MA. Every year my fiancé and I take one planned vacation, we go to the Frozen Four (college hockey championships) where ever it is. The location changes each year but I know the location at least two years in advance, which give me a good amount of time to plan. I have decided to take advantage of this trip for completing my goal so going forward I will be running at each location. However, after reviewing the list that isn’t going to be big help for the upcoming years since they are going to be in Florida (2016), Illinois (2017), and Minnesota (2018). Notice that they are all states I will have completed. Hopefully the following years will bring locations I haven’t been too.
>Esprit de She in one of the many locations they have!
>Nike Nike Women’s Half Marathon, in either San Francisco or the new location they are announcing soon!
>Zooma, and there are so many fun locations to pick from!
There is a little bit more planning that needs to happen but I am pretty sure, no I know, I will get eight state completed before the end of the year.
Do you have any races you suggest? I would love suggestions!!!!!
