There have been a lot of things that I have encountered on my journey that were outside my comfort zone but the number one thing was, strength training! I was SOOO scared of it because it was SOOO outside my comfort zone.
I realized about two years into my journey that my body had changed a lot but not the way I wanted it to. All that had happened was that I got smaller, I had no definition or muscle. I knew very well I needed to add strength training but I didn’t know where to start. So, I started seeing a personal trainer (Logan).
Logan started my love affair with strength training! I am not sure why I was so scared to get started but I sure wish I would have taken the leap sooner. Now a week doesn’t go by that I don’t have some sort of strength training in my routine.
Strength training has changed my life (much like running has also)! I can now do things I used to struggle with. For example, when we were in Florida in February we went golfing and I golfed the best game of my life! I assumed it was because we rented clubs and the clubs I had were really nice. However, Justin felt it was because I had more upper body strength. I thought he was crazy! So we went to the driving range with my clubs and imagine my surprise when my drives were going twice as long as they had last year!
Oh, I completely forgot! It has improved my running ten-fold! Now, I do not suggest this but I did do it! I ran a half marathon in October 2014 that during my training I only ran four miles TOTAL!!! However, I PR’s that race by over 7 minutes!!! What did I do different? I lifted weights daily. I started BodyPump and saw my body change, in turn so did my running!
So if you there are any of you out there who are scared to get started with strength training, DO NOT WAIT ANY LONGER!!! It is not nearly as scary as you think it will be! You will be so happy you did! I sure am!!!
