Losing weight a second time is so hard! Losing weight the first time around was easy! I didn’t think so at the time but looking back now it was. This time, I can’t say that’s the case. In fact, losing weight the second time around is really %#$*& hard! Excuse my swearing but there is no way around it! It’s challenging! But if you know anything about me, I like a challenge!
One of my personal mottos is, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” And that couldn’t be truer for this second time around! But I’m up for the challenge!
So, here are a few things I have learned from losing weight a second time around.
Lesson 1 of Losing Weight a Second Time: Give Yourself Grace
Oh, this has been a hard lesson to learn! But it’s been the most important lesson to learn. I don’t have to do everything perfectly! I know it’s hard to believe but it’s true! When you let that go, weight loss will come much easier!
Looking back to the first time I lost weight, I was really hard on myself. I had to do everything perfectly for fear I wouldn’t lose weight fast enough. This time, there is no need to rush because now I know that I will get there. I know that this is a process and sometimes the process will go as planned and sometimes it won’t. And when it doesn’t go as planned it doesn’t mean I’m doing it wrong. It means that I need to re-evaluate things and determine next steps. I need to give myself grace!
Lesson 2 of Losing Weight a Second Time: Accept that it is Not Going to Be Exactly Like The First Time
What!!! Really? Yes! I came into this process thinking I had it in the bag! The first time I lost 60 pounds in a year with little to no work (not really but far less work than I am doing now). Here’s the thing, I’m not the same exact person I was six years ago so why would the process be the same? Once, I came to a realization that I needed to adjust my processes for the here and now things got much easier (still not easy but easier than when I was trying to do everything exactly the same). Why is losing weight a second time so much harder?!?! Here are a few things I have learned along the way to make it a little easier!Click To Tweet
Lesson 3 of Losing Weight a Second Time: Don’t Focus on the Number
The first time I did this I was SO FOCUSED ON WHAT THE SCALE SAID! The scale was my indicator of success and failure. First off, there is no failure in this journey! Maybe so learnings but not failures. Second, success is not entirely dependent on the scale. Now, I say that because I do use the scale a lot but for a much different reason than what my weight says. Early on this year, EatSmart gave me the GetFit Digital Body Fat Scale to try out. I’m always careful when I am asked to write about scales because I was so focused on the number the first time around. However, what got me about the GetFit Digital Body Fat Scale is the name of it, Body Fat Scale! This “scale” not only tells your weight and body fat but your total body water percentage and muscle and bone mass percentage. As a numbers person, this is actually data that is helpful!
What I have learned in my weight loss journey(s) is that body fat is a much better indicator of getting healthy! Losing body fat is much more important than losing weight! When you are just focused on losing weight all that matters is the number. But when you are focused on losing body fat and keeping muscle or gaining muscle mass it so much healthier! So, honestly, I do “weigh” myself 2-4 times a week but I am really focused on body fat percentage and muscle and bone mass %. To me, they are much better indicators of “losing weight”!
Lesson 4 of Losing Weight a Second Time: Ask for Help
As a perfectionist, asking for help is a no-no. However, as a recovering perfectionist and someone who is giving themselves some grace help is super important. I can’t do it all even though I used to think I could. Guess what, it’s not the end of the world if I have to ask my husband to take the dogs to daycare and pick them up so I can go for a run or grocery shopping. In fact, it’s really great when my husband makes dinner so I can get a run in! There really isn’t anything much better than coming home to dog kisses and a hot meal! So, ask for help!
Lesson 5 of Losing Weight a Second Time: Give Yourself Grace
Yes, I already listed this one but it’s really that important! Be nice to yourself! You are doing a really great thing by focusing on you and your health! Don’t negate it by being hard on yourself. You will get much further if you allow yourself to have learnings (notice I didn’t say failures or mistakes) here and there. Giving yourself grace is a good thing, I promise!
If losing weight a second time is a goal for you it can be done! But you have to remember it’s going to be different than the first time you did it. And when you do that, you will see that success comes much faster! Remember though, weight is only a number there are so many other important pieces to being healthy.
