When things do not go as planned, I don’t tend to do well! And that is exactly what happened to me this weekend…
On Wednesday, I started feeling some discomfort in my foot and I didn’t really think much of it. However, that quickly changed because on Thursday and Friday the pain started getting to the point where it brought tears to my eyes when I would use my foot. I knew I needed to see a doctor but the issue was that we were on vacation and not in the best place to have my foot looked at.
I probably did the wrong thing by Googling my symptoms, knowing that it would be a couple of days until I could see a doctor. All of the symptoms (pain when I used my foot, pain subsided when not in use, swelling, painful to the touch) concerned me that I was looking at a stress fracture. All I could think about was how a stress fracture was not what I needed with all of the training I had planned for this summer.
So, as soon as we got back yesterday afternoon I went straight to Twin Cities Orthopedics ACCESS Walk-In Clinic to find out what was going on with my foot. I met with the Physicians Assistant and she had the same concern as I did, as stress fracture. After a quick once over she sent me straight in for x-rays to eliminate the possibility of a stress fracture. After looking at my x-rays, she was able to determine that there was no stress fracture (YAY!!!) but that I did have Posterior Tibial Tendonitis.
The first thing that went through my mind was “Yes, this shouldn’t interfere with training!” Then the PA said that was going to put me in a boot to make sure it healed as fast as possible (hopefully for just two weeks). Wait, what was that, at BOOT? Yep, I heard her right, a boot. Not cool!
I have had a lot of emotions around this injury. I was happy to find out what was causing the pain. I am mad/sad/frustrated that I am sidelined for the time-being, I was so excited to focus on my triathlon training. I know, in the long run this is the best way to proceed but it just sucks! I hate when things don’t go as planned! However, now I need to put my focus on healing and coming out stronger in the end! It will be challenge but I am going take it head on!
Have you head an injury that made you put your plans on hold? How did you deal with it?
